ABSTRACT

Aim: This study aimed to investigate whether non-ionizing radiation emitted by smartphones is likely to cause genotoxic effects on oral epithelial cells. Methods: Thirty adults were distributed into two groups according to the mobile phone brand used, namely Samsung (Samsung, Seoul, South Korea) and Apple (Apple, California, USA). The material was collected with gentle swabbing of the right and left buccal mucosa using a cervical brush, then the micronucleus test was performed. Results: The Mann-Whitney test with a 5% significance level did not reveal statistically significant differences in micronuclei frequency between the exposed and non-exposed sides (p=0.251). The different brands do not seem to cause risks of inducing genetic damage because there were no statistically significant differences between them (p=0.47). Conclusion: Therefore, our results suggest no correlations of micronuclei frequency in the exposed buccal cells of mobile phone users at the exposure standard levels observed

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background In paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF), pulmonary vein isolation using cryoballoon (CB-PVI) has similar efficacy as radiofrequency ablation (RF-PVI) has. In redo ablation procedures following RF-PVI, PV reconnection is high, whereas in patients with redo following CB-PVI, information is scarce. Objective To determine the sites of PV reconnection in patients who underwent redo ablation after initial CB-PVI. Methods Patients who underwent an AF redo procedure, following an initial CB-PVI for PAF were included. LA electroanatomic mapping was used. A reconnection site was defined as the presence of a voltage of 0.3mV or greater in the PV and unidirectional or bidirectional conduction in the PV during sinus rhythm. Reconnections sites were identified using a clock-face view description and were ablated with radiofrequency afterwards. Results Out of the 165 patients who underwent initial PVI, 27 required redo ablations, of which 18 (66.6%) were males, with a mean age of 55+12.3 years. The time of recurrence was 8.9+6.4 months. PV reconnection was found in 21 (77.8%) patients. There was a total of 132 conduction gaps, six per patient, 3.6 per PV. A significant number of gaps were in the anterosuperior region of the left superior PV (LSPV), and in the septal and inferior regions of the right superior PV (RSPV). Conclusions The upper PVs had the most reconnection sites, mostly at the anterior region of the LSPV and the septal region of the RSPV. The reason behind this may be due to greater atrial wall thickness, and difficulty in achieving adequate cryoballoon contact.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most frequent and incapacitating pathologies today, especially of the knee. Among the possible approaches for knee OA, the neurotomy of the genicular nerves by radiofrequency (RF) has been gaining prominence. However, as this is a relatively new procedure, indications for its implementation are still unclear. The objective of the present reviewis to identify the main indications of the use of RF for the treatment of knee OA in themedical literature. A review of the literature was performed in January 2018 through a search in the PubMed, ClinicalKey and Google Scholar databases. After reviewing themain articles on the subject, it was concluded that the main indications of the use of RF for the treatment of kneeOAwere:OA Kellgren-Lawrence grades 3 and 4, withmoderate to severe pain and failure of conservative treatment, mainly in elderly people; persistence of pain even after total knee arthroplasty (TKA); patients with an indication for TKAwho refuse to undergo surgical treatment.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the use of the radiofrequency thermoablation of the saphenous vein with the ligation technique, and complete removal of the saphenous vein, from the saphenofemoral junction to the ankle. Methods: A total of 49 patients with chronic venous disease in the Comprehensive Classification System for Chronic Venous Disorders (CEAP) classes 2 to 4 for clinical signs, etiology, anatomic distribution and pathophysiology, were assessed at baseline, after 4 weeks, and after 1 year. The parameters assessed were complications, period of absence from activities, Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS) and quality of life scores according to Aberdeen Varicose Veins Questionnaire (AVVQ). They were re-examined 1 and 3 years after treatment to evaluate recurrence rates. Results: The success rate per limb (p=0.540), VCSS (p=0.636), AVVQ (p=0.163), and clinical complications were similar in the two treatment groups. Nevertheless, the radiofrequency thermoablation group had significant shorter length of hospital stay (0.69±0.47) and absence from activities (8.62±4.53), p<000.1. Conclusion: Patients submitted to radiofrequency thermoablation had an occlusion rate, clinical recurrence and improvement in quality of life comparable to removal of the saphenous vein. However, these patients spent less time hospitalized and away from their daily activities during recovering.

ABSTRACT

RESULTADOS: Vinte voluntários participaram do estudo.

AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy of inductive shortwave treatment in sedentary individuals with non-specific chronic low back pain. METHODS: A quasi-experimental and cross-over trial was performed with sedentary individuals with chronic back pain. The sample was recruited among students from the State University of Western Paraná (Unioeste), aged between 18 and 25 years old, who had low back pain of non-traumatic postural origin for more than three months, were sedentary, and accepted to participate in the study. The intervention protocol consisted in the application of short waves by inductive method for 15 minutes, once a day, three times a week, with interval of one day between each application. In the following week, volunteers also received placebo treatment three times a week, with time similar to that performed in the treatment week, but the equipment was only switched on, without emission of the electromagnetic field. The protocol was applied for two weeks. The variables analyzed were the degree of functional disability, assessed by the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (QIRM), at the beginning of the experiment and at the end of each week; and pain, assessed by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), before and after each session. Data were presented as mean and standard deviation or median and quartiles, and the accepted level of significance was 5%. RESULTS: Twenty volunteers participated in the study. For ODI, there was a reduction in the disability values throughout the treatment week, with a return to previous values in the placebo week; there were no differences between treatment and placebo for the MIRR. By VAS, there was a reduction in pain intensity over the three days of therapy, which occurred only on the second day of the placebo. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with short waves in the inductive modality was effective in reducing pain in sedentary patients with chronic low back pain, contributing to improve functional capacity

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the clinical response of patients with symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause after application of microablative fractional radiofrequency in the vagina and vaginal introitus. Methods: Fourteen patients with symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause underwent three applications of microablative fractional radiofrequency with a 30-day interval, using the Wavetronic 6000HF-FRAXX device and a fractional vaginal electrode. The questionnaires World Health Organization Quality of Life (for quality of life evaluation), Female Sexual Function Index and Quality of Life Adapted Questionnaire in the Domain of Sexual Satisfaction (for sexual function and satisfaction evaluation) were administered before and after the applications (30 to 60 days after the last procedure), in addition to the satisfaction questionnaire after procedure. Results: There was an increase in almost all dimensions on average in quality of life, with statistical significance only in the health domain. There was a significant improvement in the sexual domains in almost all dimensions. All patients stopped using lubricant during intercourse after treatment. In the satisfaction questionnaire after treatment, we observed that the vast majority felt cured or much better (29% and 64%, respectively, total of 92.6%) and were very satisfied or satisfied (43 and 57%, respectively, total of 100%). The only patient who reported little improvement had an 18-year postmenopausal history and was treatment naïve. Conclusion: Microablative fractional radiofrequency was effective in treating symptoms of vaginal dryness and dyspareunia, and eliminated the use of vaginal lubricant during the period observed. Since this is a pilot study with a small number of patients, further studies are required to corroborate our findings and evaluate the long-term effects of microablative fractional radiofrequency on the vaginal tissue.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: Radiofrequency ablation of renal sympathetic nerve (RDN) shows effective BP reduction in hypertensive patients while the specific mechanisms remain unclear. Objective: We hypothesized that abnormal levels of norepinephrine (NE) and changes in NE-related enzymes and angiotensinconverting enzyme 2 (ACE2), angiotensin (Ang)-(1-7) and Mas receptor mediate the anti-hypertensive effects of RDN. Methods: Mean values of systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were assessed at baseline and follow-up. Plasma and renal norepinephrine (NE) concentrations were determined using highperformance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection, and levels of NE-related enzyme and ACE2-Ang(1-7)- Mas were measured using real time PCR, Western blot and immunohistochemistry or Elisa in a hypertensive canine model fed with high-fat diet and treated with RDN. The parameters were also determined in a sham group treated with renal arteriography and a control group fed with normal diet. Results: RDN decreased SBP, DBP, MAP, plasma and renal NE. Compared with the sham group, renal tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression was lower and renalase expression was higher in the RDN group. Compared with the control group, renal TH and catechol-o-methyl transferase (COMT) were higher and renalase was lower in the sham group. Moreover, renal ACE2, Ang-(1-7) and Mas levels of the RDN group were higher than those of the sham group, which were lower than those of the control group. Conclusion: RDN shows anti-hypertensive effect with reduced NE and activation of ACE2-Ang(1-7)-Mas, indicating that it may contribute to the anti-hypertensive effect of RDN.

ABSTRACT

AbstractThe nonablative radiofrequency is a procedure commonly used for the treatment of skin laxity from an increase in tissue temperature. The goal is to induce thermal damage to thus stimulate neocollagenesis in deep layers of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. However, many of these devices haven't been tested and their parameters are still not accepted by the scientific community. Because of this, it is necessary to review the literature regarding the physiological effects and parameters for application of radiofrequency and methodological quality and level of evidence of studies. A literature search was performed in MEDLINE, PEDro, SciELO, PubMed, LILACS and CAPES and experimental studies in humans, which used radiofrequency devices as treatment for facial or body laxity, were selected. The results showed that the main physiological effect is to stimulate collagen synthesis. There was no homogeneity between studies in relation to most of the parameters used and the methodological quality of studies and level of evidence for using radiofrequency are low. This fact complicates the determination of effective parameters for clinical use of this device in the treatment of skin laxity. The analyzed studies suggest that radiofrequency is effective, however the physiological mechanisms and the required parameters are not clear in the literature.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine whether shortwave electromagnetic radiation in pulsed mode with a frequency of 45 Hz, promotes teratogenic changes, stillbirths and changes in organ weight at birth in the fetuses of pregnant rats exposed to this radiation. METHOD: Ten black Macole pregnant female rats were studied, 5 in a test group, subjected to electromagnetic radiation with an average power of 4.5 W for 15 minutes, on a daily basis, during the entire period of pregnancy and 5 in a control group that was not exposed to radiation. At day 21, the animals were euthanized for analysis of fetuses. To assess the thermal effect of the radiation the abdominal temperature was measured before and after application, together with prevailing ambient temperature. The fetuses were evaluated through the Galant reflex to assess the existence of stillbirths. The fetuses were removed and weighed; through a midline laparotomy their hearts, stomachs, kidneys and livers were excised and weighed, wet and dry. Twenty-nine fetuses were harvested in the control group and 59 in the test group, with no cases of stillbirth, teratogenesis or malformation of internal organs. RESULTS: The analysis found no differences in birthweight and weight of dehydrated organs when compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: The results in our findings suggest that exposure to shortwave therapy without significant heat buildup, does not lead to teratogenic changes and did not affect the mass and weight of dehydrated internal organs.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the protective effects of chilling the bile ducts with cold (5°C) 5% glucose solution (GS) during radiofrequency (RF) administration. METHODS: Twenty male pigs (3 mos. old; 25-30 kg) were subjected to RF delivery with chilling (experimental group, N=10) or without chilling (control group, N=10). Half of the animals in each group were euthanized immediately after the operation, and half were euthanized one week later. The following histological variables in relation to the bile ducts were evaluated by a pathologist (blind examiner): degenerative changes to the epithelium; epithelial necrosis; ulceration, regenerative changes of the epithelium; polymorphonuclear neutrophil infiltration; and thermal effects. RESULTS: The experimental group (88 bile ducts examined) showed reduced thermal damage relative to the control group (86 bile ducts examined) as demonstrated by significant differences in the following histopathological parameters: epithelial detachment of biliary epithelium (84.1% vs. 59.3%; p<0.006); elongation/palisade arrangement of nuclei (65.1% vs. 87.5%; p<0.001); pseudo-goblet cells (32.9% vs. 56.8%; p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Infusion of 5% glucose solution (5°C) has a protective effect on bile ducts subjected to heat (95-110°C, 12 min) from radiofrequency thermal ablation device. .

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Burns have high incidence and high mortality rates in Brazil and the world, which to make a big public health problem. After the trauma, the sequelae of burns resulting from a process of tissue reorganization, characterized by excessive and uncontrolled collagen synthesis, resulting in a hypertrophic or keloid scar. Resources such as radiofrequency thermotherapy and phototherapy as Intense Pulsed Light and Low Power Laser reorganize collagen fibers and reshape the skin fabric. Objective: This work aims to investigate the features of Radio Frequency Thermotherapy and phototherapy Intense Pulsed Light in the sequel to burn. Case report: The case of patient 21 years-old, who suffered accident burning flame, alcohol causal agent in the face and upper limbs, progressing to sequelae of hypertrophic scars type is reported, in which weekly sessions were held Radio Frequency related to Intense Pulsed Light and low power laser in the sequel to burn. Case study assessed by inspection and palpation, Rosenberg questionnaire (EAR) Self-Esteem Scale, Reviewer Blind and photometry.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To describe an effective experimental model to study the Achilles tendon healing. METHODS: Forty male Rattus norvegicus albinus, Wistar lineage adult male weighing 250 to 300g were used for this experiment and thirty were surgically submitted to bilateral partial transverse section of the Achilles tendon. The right tendon was treated with radio waves (RF) whereas the left tendon served as control. On the third postoperative day, the rats were divided into four experimental groups consisting of ten rats each which were treated with monopolar RF adjusted to 650 kHz and 2w, for two minutes twice a week and a group of normal animals without any intervention, until they were sacrificed on the 7th, 14th and 28th days, respectively. Tendons were weighed and collagen quantification was evaluated by hydroxyprolin content. RESULTS: Significant reduction in collagen content on day 7, 14 and 28 was related to control experiment to normal tendon (7 days, p<0.01; 14 e 28 days, p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The experimental model has been effective and available to be used to study Achilles tendon healing. .

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) affects primarily women over 50 years of age and its etiology is unknown in most cases. Drugs are first line treatment, but they are ineffective in 40% of cases. Interventional therapies are a management option in those cases. Objective: To determine the safety and efficacy of Gasserian ganglion thermal (TR) radiofrequency in patients with TN. Materials and method: Descriptive, prospective follow-up study of a cohort of 15 patients with a diagnosis of TN who underwent Gasserian ganglion TR at the Colombian Pain Institute between May 2010 and May 2011, with at least one year follow-up. Results: The mean age of the patients intervened was 52 years, 73% were females with rightsided predominance (67%) with involvement mainly of the second and third branch of the trigeminal nerve. After the intervention, all 15 patients went from severe pain to a condition ranging between mild and no pain, and 50% were event pain-free one year after the procedure. Conclusions: TN has a significant effect on quality of life. The main treatment is pharmacological but when it fails, Gasserian ganglion TR is an effective and safe option available in our setting.

ABSTRACT

This paper reviews and makes a critical analysis of radiofrequency in ophthalmology. Localized heating of the cornea has been apllied since 1889 for different therapeutic and surgical objectives. The principle that heating corneal tissue causes shrinking of the collagen that changes the corneal curvature. After the approval of FDA in 2004, we initiated a multicenter study in Brazil coordinated by ABC School of Medicine that resulted in an analyses of 258 patients. Inconclusion the study showed that the procedure had a temporary result and the best results were obtained in patients between 45 and 55 years old without optical correction for far.We believe that the problem has not been solved yet and a great deal of research effort should be focused.

ABSTRACT

Terahertz wave is a new coherent far infrared source that spans the gap between microwave and infrared radiation. Compared with microwave, X-ray and NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) imaging, terahertz imaging has the advantages of high resolution and no harm to biological samples, which has been comprehensively applied in biomedical fields in recent years, especially in cancer diagnosis. Combined with the terahertz imaging systems of transmission type and reflection type, a general review of its application in diagnosis of skin basal cell carcinoma, breast cancer, liver cancer and cervical cancer is provided. The achievements and the problems to be solved are also discussed, which made a beneficial exploration to the cancer diagnosis technology. Copyright © 2012 by TUMOR.
